We know that many people can think of marquees as just for summer weddings, put up and used for a weekend, a short-term solution for a one-off event. However, increasingly more of our business is coming from long-term Marquee Hire, and you may be surprised at the type of events bespoke marquees are used for.
One of our long-term clients is The Royal Society and for the last few years, we have provided a marquee for their Summer Science Exhibition. For those of you unfamiliar with The Royal Society, it is situated in Carlton Terrace overlooking The Mall and is a building steeped in history. It is a beautiful space inside but is not big enough to sustain a long exhibition. That is where Trafalgar and JF Marquees stepped in to help.
We erected a 9 x 48-metre marquee on Carlton Terrace, which afforded great views of The Mall for all attendees. It also meant that the exhibition would not be affected if the Great British Summer Weather did its’ worst. In addition to the structure of the marquee, we provided chairs, tables, marquee lining and lighting in the form of chandeliers.
As always, access and egress for a Central London installation, was interesting, especially as the Tour of Britain was taking place at the same time. But, with precise planning, we pulled off even the most challenging of set ups and takedowns.
Another long-term client is Chessington Garden Centre. With this project, we get to contribute to the magic of Christmas by providing a marquee to host their Christmas Grotto. The Garden Centre itself is using space to its’ capacity at Christmas time, selling Christmas trees and decorations, so we provide a marquee on their patio area that keeps Father Christmas and all his visitors warm and dry.
As well as the marquee, Marquee Hire also provided heating and lighting and roof overlay in festive colours. The versatility of a marquee space also means the client can update and create the theme they want as they are literally starting with a blank canvas. Families travel for miles to visit the Chessington Garden Centre Christmas Experience and we are proud to contribute to such a successful event.
Our experience of co-ordinating large long-term hires means that we have several regular clients who use us year after year. We’ve had some great news at Trafalgar and JF Marquees in the last few weeks. Our Managing Director, James Morris, has been nominated as Young Director of the Year at the IoD (Institute of Directors) awards. Firstly, this means we get to attend a glitzy awards ceremony (well we’ve got to get our priorities straight!), but becoming a finalist in such prestigious awards means a whole heap of other positive things for our business too.
Recognition
With the IoD awards there was a stringent application process which included a written entry and an interview. To become a finalist is great recognition for a job well done by our Managing Director, James and shows that the company is on the right track.

Becoming an awards finalist is a great good news story for us to share among our clients, suppliers and associates, and we’ve already had some lovely messages of congratulations. Motivation
The announcement of James’ nomination was a great morale boost in the office and has really spurred us on to make 2017 a fantastic year at Trafalgar and JF Marquees. Knowing that your work is recognised as some of the best by an organisation like the IoD is a great accolade.

Taking part in any awards nomination process is a great way of reflecting on how far your business has come and where you want it to go next. It has helped us formulate ongoing plans for the business and reflect on some of the most positive things in our business, as a whole.

Plan Your 2015 Event Early To Avoid Disappointment
You may be thinking, it’s only July, why would I need to be planning for 2015? But think of it this way, the school holidays are upon us which means 6 weeks of trying to juggle work and the children, and before you know it, it will be September which means its downhill all the way to Christmas. If you have an event which you wish to take place in 2015, such as a wedding, a party or perhaps a corporate event for work, you really need to start thinking about getting the basics booked up. 2015 sees a number of large sporting events including the England Rugby World Cup and the NBA Global Games in London, so events companies will be busy organising celebratory events and availability may be limited.
First of all, you need to choose your location. Many hotels and function rooms will be booked up months in advance – particularly during the summer months or in the run up to Christmas. Hiring a winter marquee hire will give you some valuable added flexibility, after all if you have the perfect location but the room is simply not big enough, the marquee can make the venue a viable option. Don’t forget marquees can often also be added on to provide a temporary extension of an existing room.
Once you’ve booked the venue, it can be a good idea to book the caterer too. Reputable caterers will already have bookings in place for 2015, so have a think about the type of food which would be most appropriate for your event, and starting getting some quotes. It might also be worth asking if the caterers can provide serving staff too – especially if you are hosting a sit down meal or if you wish canapés to be offered to guests on arrival.
Popular entertainers and other suppliers will no doubt also be in great demand, so if you have a particular band or DJ which you wish to perform at your party, make sure you get your booking in well in advance! Items such as decorations and flowers can be left until closer to the big day, but the more you can organise in advance, the less worry and stress you should have in in the run up to the event.
